Striders would flinch in recoil when you damaged them. Gunships and Hunter-Choppers would have their parts fly off as you hit them. Nihilanth had glowing orby thingies that would dissapear as you shot him. Half Life has never had damage bars, but it always has had some way of indicating damage to the player. Even when I was trying to duck around corners to dodge Vort attacks, I would still quickly take damage. I get it's thematic all the Dark Energy flows out of the huge machine, but from a gameplay perspective, I hated it. By the time I had gotten to the supplies, the Vort had already rushed me and used his shield to kill me by trapping me in the corner. My biggest frustration by far was that I was very low on ammo for my AR2, had very little health and power left, and was stuck on the opposite side of the room from where the supplies were. Inbetween stages of the main machine shutdown, there's no time for you as the player to quickly run over to the ammo stashes, power outlets, etc and get yourself back to full health before you have the next fight to deal with. There's 3 things that I found made this fight such a pain to sit through: ![]() I like a challenge, but this fight in particular with the spongy Vort sucked quite a lot of the enjoyment I had over the final fight. ![]() Honestly, the final boss feels a bit unfair. ![]()
